North Station (Estación del Norte), a grand gateway to the city

Even if you’re not arriving in Valencia by train, stopping by the Estación del Norte is a must on any visit to the city. Its impressive modernist architecture and the colourful tiled mosaics will make you want to catch the train here more often.

Its name has nothing to do with its geographical location and no, there isn’t a “South Station” to distinguish it from. It simply comes from the former Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte, which inaugurated it in 1917 to connect with northern Spain.

It remains the city’s main railway hub, although many high-speed train lines now arrive at the neighbouring Joaquín Sorolla Station.

Why visit Estación del Norte

It is one of the finest examples of Valencian modernism, framed within the avant-garde “Viennese Secession”

The outstanding quality and colour of its tiled decorations, along with the delicate wood and wrought-iron work

Its mosaics are a true pictorial lesson in local traditions and the city’s most iconic landmarks

Its central location, next to the City Hall, the Bullring and the Colón shopping area

What to see at Estación del Norte

✓ The façade

The numerous oranges decorating the station’s elegant façade leave no doubt about the destination you’re in.

✓ The lobby

Even buying your ticket is a pleasure in the spacious hall with coffered ceilings and trencadís decoration, the traditional tiled mosaics.

✓ The mosaic room

The station’s former café is undoubtedly its most spectacular space. Its walls and ceilings are covered in vibrant mosaics depicting Valencian traditions, from falleras beside the Miguelete to the rice fields of L’Albufera.
