What does a tradition taste like? In Valencia, it tastes like pumpkin, almond, icing sugar… and a traditional oven. This is Les Geperudetes, a very special sweet that you can find these days in bakeries and pastry shops throughout the city, and which was created as an edible tribute to the Virgen de los Desamparados, known as La Geperudeta, the patron saint of Valencia.
These are round cakes with a soft and fluffy texture like a sponge cake, made with typical ingredients of Valencian pastry: pumpkin and almond. The most beautiful part (besides the flavor) is that they have the silhouette of the Virgin in the center, drawn with icing sugar. A true jewel of tradition that is pleasing to the eye and enjoyed with every bite.
In many neighborhood bakeries that focus on artisan and local products. Some that already have them ready for you are:
Forn Llàtzer, Aparicio Albiñana, 5 (Campanar)
Horno San Pablo, Avenida del Oeste, 25 (Ciutat Vella)
La Tahona del Abuelo, Gorgos, 6/ Àngels, 84/ Compte d'Alaquàs, 1
Horno Masanet, Cardenal Benlloc, 71 (Pla del Real)
Momplà, PIzarro, 32 (L'Eixample)
Horno Pastelería Honduras, Plaza Honduras, 7 (Algiròs)
Horno Valencia, Sueca, 55 (Russafa)
Forn Velarte, Vicent Puchol, 47
And there are many more. So this year, if you are going to celebrate the city's patron saint's festival, do it with a little piece of culture in your hand. Because in València, traditions are also eaten. And because supporting our long-standing bakeries… also tastes very good.
