Museum of the Mariner's Holy Week

Rosario 1, 46011 - València

TOURISTIC AREA: Sea towns, Marina and beaches

This museum is housed in a former rice mill and serves as a true temple of the city's Holy Week celebrations. This period has been dubbed Maritime Holy Week because it is celebrated in the working-class maritime areas of València, specifically: the neighbourhoods of El Grau, Canyamelar and Cabanyal.

The museum is also known as the Salvador Caurín House Museum, named for the man who acted as advisor and president of the Main Council for many years. Upon entering, you will immediately perceive the mysticism of this space, which contains the artistic heritage of the city's many corporations, brotherhoods and confraternities.  Highlights include pieces by such important sculptors as Mariano Benlliure, Bernardo Morales, Carlos Román, Vicente Salvador and Inocencio Cuesta, among others.

Also on display are traditional attire, decorations, standards, staffs, publications, heritage elements from different groups and other items used in the processions. Each piece is accompanied by its own information card, providing visitors with every detail. The exhibition space also includes a panel showing how this religious festival has evolved over the years.

The most noteworthy pieces in the museum display may be the costumes for biblical characters.  It is no surprise that they should be found here, for one of the distinguishing features of Maritime Holy Week is that it includes live re-enactments of the three transitions commemorated during this time: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The museum is also a cultural centre offering temporary exhibitions, lectures, Holy Week music concerts, and drum and bugle corps competitions. It is clearly a must-see for anyone who wants to understand how Holy Week is experienced and felt in these maritime neighbourhoods.
