Discover the 18 replicas that reveal the original appearance of the relic at the Cathedral Museum
If you’re passionate about history and would like to discover one of Valencia’s most iconic treasures up close, head to the Cathedral Museum before 29 October 2026 and explore this exhibition, which reveals some of the best-kept secrets surrounding the origin and composition of the Holy Chalice.
Do you know what it is? It is the cup that, according to tradition, was used by Jesus at the Last Supper. And, as if that weren’t enough, it was also the chalice used by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI during Mass.
The Holy Chalice you can see today in Valencia Cathedral is the result of several transformations. If you’d like to see what it originally looked like, you can admire this collection of 18 replicas of the upper cup of the relic.
Crafted from glass, resin, quartz and carved agates, these pieces are displayed along a route that allows you to see what the original stone looked like. It once had a whitish hue before thermal treatments carried out during the Roman period altered its appearance.
The exhibition also highlights one of the chalice’s most remarkable features: its ability to create a striking optical effect that makes it change colour depending on how the light falls on it.
Will you come and see it?
