Welcome summer by celebrating Saint John’s Eve
Categories: parties and traditions.
TOURISTIC AREA: Sea towns, Marina and beaches
Build your bonfire, make a wish, and enjoy the most magical night of the year on the city’s beaches.
Saint John’s Eve welcomes the summer solstice, and what better way to celebrate it than on the Mediterranean beaches, right?
Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy the evening while respecting the environment.
Firewood Distribution
Create your own cleansing bonfire with the free firewood that the City Council will distribute at nine points along the Seafront Promenade.
This year, more than 25 tonnes of firewood will be distributed, sourced from the pruning of the city’s street trees.
The best part? It has already been sorted and cut into pieces, so all you have to do is use it.
Please note that lighting fires is prohibited on the beaches of the l’Albufera Natural Park, from Pinedo to Perellonet, and special surveillance measures will be in place to ensure the protection of the natural environment.
Once your bonfire is ready, don’t forget the midnight rituals, such as jumping over the waves or the flames, which are said to bring good luck.
And, of course, remember that the beach belongs to everyone and should be left in perfect condition.
Although the cleaning operation is extensive, you should also collect any rubbish you generate during the celebration and leave the area exactly as you found it.
Do your part to help keep our beaches beautiful for years to come!
Safety Measures
Valencia City Council has prepared a comprehensive special operation to guarantee safety throughout the celebration.
More than 300 Local Police officers will be deployed across the city’s beaches. They will operate with an advanced command post in the northern beach area, drone surveillance, and support from the Canine Unit.
In addition, the Group for Assistance to Victims of Abuse (GAMA) will have an assistance van stationed next to Hotel Neptuno from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
There will also be four Purple Points located along the El Cabanyal and La Malvarrosa seafront promenades to provide information, prevention, and support in cases of possible crimes against sexual freedom.
Medical assistance will be reinforced with a large team of rescue, lifeguard, and emergency professionals, as well as a field hospital operating throughout the night and several ambulances distributed along the beaches.
Public Transport with Extended Hours
Forget about the car!
On Saint John’s Eve, many people will be heading to the beaches, so the best thing you can do is use public transport.
Bus routes 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 31, 32, 92, 93, 95, 98 and 99 stop just a few metres from the shore, and their frequency will be higher than usual.
In addition, operating hours will be extended so you can make the most of the night.
Street Parties
If you want to enjoy music and a great atmosphere, plenty of Saint John’s Eve street parties are waiting for you in different neighbourhoods across the city.
An alternative plan to the beach, but just as fun!
More Things You Should Know
During the Saint John’s Eve celebrations in Valencia, you will find information boards showing the location of the firewood distribution points, authorised bonfire areas, medical services, and the 95 portable toilets installed in La Malvarrosa, El Cabanyal and Pinedo.
And remember that at 4:00 a.m. everyone must leave the beach so that the cleaning services can do their work and restore it to perfect condition.
Now that you know all this, all that’s left is for you to come and enjoy one of the most magical nights of the year!
