The History of Chess
Three 15th century Valencian poets first described the movement of the queen piece in the game of chess in the poem “Scachs d’amor” (1475), thus initiating the rules of modern chess.
Two decades later, another Valencian author published in one of his works the new rules of the game, which would be disseminated throughout Europe by means of an exceptional ally, the printing press.
550 years later, the city of Valencia is celebrating this anniversary with a wide-ranging programme of activities combining history, culture and competition.

La Petxina cultural-sports complex Monday to Friday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visit the “Sala Valencia, Origen del Ajedrez Moderno” to learn about the origin and expansion of modern chess in Europe and read the Francesch Vicent comic, which tells the story of the first author and master of modern chess.
