Market Square

The Plaza del Mercado goes back to the days when it was part of the Muslim quarter of La Boatella, near the fortress gate of Bab Al Kaisaria. The origin of the market can be traced to the days following the Reconquista (the re-conquest) when Jaime I conceded the right to operate public markets in certain cities of the Kingdom. The importance of the plaza is not merely commercial since it has also been the scene of festivities and judicial acts. It continues to be one of the busiest areas of the city centre.
