International Museum Day 2022

Categories: exhibitions.

Do not miss it

International Museum Day (IMD) will be held on Thursday, May 18, under the slogan "The power of museums".

Throughout the day, museums and cultural institutions in various parts of the world will open their doors to the public free of charge. This will let locals and tourists alike explore these facilities and enjoy the exhibits and activities they host.

Like they do every year, the museums of Valencia are joining in the celebration and have prepared a special program for the occasion.

Take this opportunity to visit every museum in the city and let this cultural experience connect with your past, open your mind to new ideas and discover the wonderful and transformative power of art.

Take note and start planning your IMD activities.

IMD has something for every taste!

The IVAM is joining this celebration by organizing, from May 16 to 22, an expanded program to showcase its full potential. As a result, in addition to Wednesday the 18th (International Museum Day) and Saturday, May 21st - on which the IVAM will open until midnight - throughout the week other areas of the museum will be made available to visitors.

May 18 – IMD

High school

IVAM Barri

Petroli takes as its starting point the novel Júlia by Isabel-Clara Simó to propose an interdisciplinary project in which the music, choreography and staging are all done entirely by the students of the Barri del Carme secondary school. The IVAM was involved in specific aspects to assist with certain technical and conceptual issues.

Times: 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Inventory (the museum thinks together)

IVAM Ciutat

The project proposes creating a dynamic meeting place that reflects on the possibilities, limits and problems related to the museum itself as an architectural, institutional, relational and creative exhibit space. As part of International Museum Day, we propose a session open to the public, designed by the group that makes up Poliglotía, with the aim of offering and showcasing part of the work process to interested citizens.

Time: 6 p.m.

Guided visit to the Anni and Josef Albers exhibit. Art and life

Expository mediations

The guided visits to the museum exhibits are hosted by members of the IVAM mediation team, a group of specialists trained in Art History, Fine Arts or Humanities. Their intention is to provide positioned readings of the IVAM exhibits to the public in an agile and enriching way. The exhibit shows the history of the well-known artist couple, but in the tour that we propose, we will pay particular attention to Anni Albers' career based on her theoretical and artistic approaches.

Time: 6 p.m.

May 21 – Museum night

Special hours, open until midnight

In collaboration with the Barri del Carme Secondary School

The tour was designed from a workshop taught by Societat Doctor Alonso with the students of the Barri del Carme Secondary School.

Plus, during the week...

Torna, Renau!

Closure of the long-term educational project that started in October 2021

IVAM Ciutat

This educational project is a long-standing collaboration between IVAM, a team of urban artists and twelve schools. During the 2021-2022 academic year, teachers and students were shadowed as part of an artistic intervention and reflection project that, underpinned by the discursive and creative possibilities of mural art, has allowed the museum to address some of the contemporary problems that most concern children and young people. As a starting point, the project was conducted in dialogue with the exhibit "Renau in exile".

Dates: From May 16 to 20

Place: The closings will take place in the different schools involved in the project

*Closed groups for project participants

Closing of the 2021-2022 edition aimed at families in the museum’s immediate environment

IVAM Barri

The IVAM opens its spaces and schedules to children, an audience that deserves to experience the museum through its own needs and rhythms. During this week of celebration, L'Extraordinari! will cap off the second edition of this project at a special event in which all participating families will be invited to take the museum to reactivate it.

Date: May 16

Time: 5:30 p.m.

*Closed groups for project participants

Esperant un joc

Children's education

IVAM Escola

The in-person facet of the project comes to an end this school year. This activity, designed and intended for all early childhood education courses, provided an excuse to turn the museum into a space for dialogue and improvised games: a space in the hands of children from multiple schools throughout the 2021-2022 school year.

Date: May 18

*Closed groups for project participants

Opening of the exhibit

Art in a wasteland 1939–1959. Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló

IVAM al territori

Consisting mainly of works belonging to the IVAM collection, this exhibition proposes an approach that considers continuities, similarities, mutual echoes and shared effort, more so than differences in style. An era in which the course of historical events - the Spanish Civil War and World War II - is such that it was absolutely decisive in poetic, discursive, formal or stylistic decisions. With works by Albers, Alfaro, Appel, Brossa, Buch, Buñuel, Chillida, Dubuffet, Duchamp, Ferrant, Fontana, French, Gil, Julio González, Gorky, Gottlieb, Gumbau, Krasner, Lucebert, Soulages, Masson, Michaux, Millares, Miró, Newman, Oteiza, Palazuelo, Pascual de Lara, Renau, Matilde Salvador, Saura, Sempere, Tàpies, Reinhardt, Val del Omar and more. And a photographic look around the reconstruction of everyday life from the images of Catalá Roca, Miguel and the Mayo Brothers.

Date: May 19

Place: Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló

Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thick Present

IVAM al territori

This series, whose starting point is the ecological emergency of l'Albufera in Valencia, has the modest purpose of generating a space in which to share some tools that we can use to put into practice our ecosocial responsibility (response-ability) and learn "the arts of living on a wounded planet", as Anna Tsing would say. The session on May 21, by Luisa Abenza (biologist, tracker, trainer at Cybertracker Spain), will focus on bird tracking.

Date: May 21

Times: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

*Closed group for project participants
