Keep the kids entertained this summer in Valencia

Mum/Dad, I’m bored… When schools break and the kids are back home for the summer, those become the most dreaded words by any parent. It’s time to go away for a few days. Somewhere warm and sunny, but also culturally stimulating, where children will find plenty to keep them entertained and everybody can have a great time. Valencia has the answer to all that.

A great destination for family holidays all year round, Valencia truly excels in the summer months, when a day on the beach can be combined with local fiestas and special activities and events at main attractions. Summer is also the perfect time to enjoy a traditional paella by the sea, or a refreshing glass of horchata on a terrace, while you plan what to do next…

Here are our top five suggestions to keep the kids happy this summer in Valencia:

Let them fight (with flowers!)

Don’t miss the grand finale of the Gran Fira de Valencia: the Battle of Flowers which takes place on Sunday 30 July. Watch the elaborate floats as they glide along the Paseo de la Alameda carrying folk in traditional costumes, who are here to fight! Soon they will start tossing flowers to the public, so bring your own to fight back.

Let them go wild

Bioparc is a zoo like no other. It recreates different natural habitats without visible barriers so children can feel like they are exploring the African savannah or the equatorial forest. This year, there are some new arrivals such as a cute baby white-collared mangabey. And on weekends, children can listen to the fascinating caretaker talks about elephants, gorillas and birds.

Let them stay up late

Who would want to go to sleep when you can go and watch a dolphin show instead? Every night this summer until 31 August, the Oceanografic will open its doors from 8pm until midnight. Enjoy magical nights amidst penguins, sharks or jellyfish, and book your place for the Nights of the Oceanografic special dolphin shows at 10.30pm with music, synchronized swimming and much more. A fun way to learn about life in our oceans.

Let them dream

In the tours organized by Turiart, children can become Roman soldiers, princesses or pirates for a day. In “Pirates of the Malvarrosa”, for example (selected Saturdays in August/September), the young buccaneers must decipher the message in a bottle to find the hidden treasure in the Marina of Valencia. And why not finish the day with a boat trip along the Valencian coast or building sandcastles on the beach?

Let them scream

The rollercoasters, dodgems, Ferris wheel, House of Horror and other attractions at the special Summer Funfair on the Turia Gardens, open until 6 August, will undoubtedly make the kids scream with delight. Then there is also the Giant Gulliver nearby, where the younger ones can play all year round. And of course, the water slides at public swimming poolslike the Piscina Parque del Oeste, which also offers themed evening parties every Friday during July and August.

One thing for sure, the kids will never have time to get bored in Valencia!
