Program of events of the festival of the Virgen de los Desamparados

Categories: parties and traditions.

Do you want to know a traditional Valencian festival? The second Sunday in May, which this year is on 12, Valencians have an appointment with "la Geperudeta", patron saint of the city. She is known for the slight tilt of her head to look at people, which makes her look like she has a small hump or "hump", hence this affectionate appellation.

The Virgen de los Desamparados, patron saint of the city, is much loved by Valencians, who pay homage to her this day. The events are spread throughout the day, with Mass for Infants, at 8:00 am in the Plaza de la Virgen; the Transfer of the image of the Pilgrim Virgin, at 10:30 am from the Basilica of the Virgin to the Cathedral, entering through the Puerta de los Hierros; mascletà at 2:00 pm in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento; and procession from the Plaza de la Virgen passing by Caballeros, Tossal, Bolsería, Mercado, Mª Cristina, San Vicente, Plaza de la Reina, Mar, Avellanas, Palau, Almoina.
