The Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) is a mandatory stop if you visit Valencia, given that it is a national benchmark of modern art. In 2019 it also celebrates its 30th anniversary with several fantastic exhibitions. Have a read about the ones you can enjoy during your visit:

  • The emergence of abstraction. Line and colour in the IVAM collection. This exhibition tries to analyse the abstract art developed from the postwar period to the present day. Exhibiting at the museum until 21 October.

  • Spain. Artistic avant-garde and social reality. 1936-1976. A case study. A set of works included in the 1976 Venice Biennial. The collection will be on until 13 January 2019.

  • The constellations of Julio Gonzalez. Between representation and abstraction. The artist reflects on the changing face of sculpture throughout the 20th century. Until 17 March 2019.

  • The spirit of an era: Ignacio Pinazo in the IVAM collection. An exhibition inspired by the Valencian artist who opened a new space for the treatment of naturalism, light and research. Until 7 May 2019.

  • Txomin Badiola. The people are not with us. The banner that Badiola designed for the facade of the IVAM is a metaphor for the nonconformity of artists, who tend to be intransigent with what is socially accepted. Until 13 January 2019.

  • Angels Marco. Vertigo. From 21 September to 6 January 2019 the latest work of one of the most important artists of the generation that brought about the renovation of sculpture in Spain between the 80s and 90s of the last century.

  • Pepe Miralles. ELISA.  This exhibition, on from 28 October to 24 February 2019, allows you to discover ELISA, a detection device based on the relationship between the "antigen" and the "antibody". Over the course of the exhibition, tests will be carried out to detect, intervene between and record the impact that HIV has had on the bodies of men in relationships with other men.

  • The weight of the ashes. Anna Malagrida. An exhibition on the project in the IVAM by the artist, the result of her interest in Las Fallas as a phenomenon of cultural identity through the observation of ashes at the end of the festivities. Visit the exhibition from 25 October to 24 February 2019.

  • Inhabiting the Mediterranean. An exhibition that looks beyond the idyllic vision of the sea and addresses the overlap and confrontation between language, culture and religion. The exhibition will be on from 29 November to 14 April 2019.

  • Annette Messager. Púdico - público. The French artist brings to the museum her creative vision which falls outside patriarchy. Her work, made up of everyday objects, vindicates the craft which has traditionally been associated with the female world, turns it around and takes it to a space of meaning and eloquence. The exhibition runs until November 4.

The IVAM is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 7.30 pm. Remember that on Fridays (from 7 pm to 9 pm), Saturdays (from 3 pm to 7 pm) and Sundays, admission is free.
