DESCRIPCIÓN

The Alameda is a one-kilometre long avenue which includes gardened areas. It lies between two roundabouts, each decorated with a monumental fountain, built in 1861 (the fountain of the four seasons) and 1878. A stone railing separates it from the old river bed, and the avenue was recently enlarged with the “New Alameda”, linking the old Puente de Aragón and the new Puente del Angel Custodio. The first poplar trees were planted during the mid-17th century (1694), and gave the avenue its name (from “álamo”, Spanish name for the poplar tree). The avenue first started at the Llano del Real, and was successively decorated with new flower beds and constructions such as fountains, statues (monument to Doctor Moliner and bust of Luis Santángel) and the two elegant square towers with their blue tiled roofs (1814). At present, slender Washingtonias, impressive Ficus trees and other plants like the Karoo Acacias and Maclura pomifera adorn this beautiful avenue.
