BESCHRIJVING

The Gran Vía Marqués del Turia is one of the main avenues in Valencia, leaving Puente de Aragón in a straight line. The landscaped areas in the centre of the avenue, with benches, lamps, flower beds and bushes, form a shady lane flanked by tall trees. The monuments to the Valencian farmer, to Teodoro Llorente and to the Marqués del Campo are set among tall Ficus trees, slim Washingtonias and pine trees. The gardens of the Gran Vía Fernando el Católico were designed a few years later (1946). These include the monument to Maestro Giner, the famous composer whose lyrics identify and celebrate the soul of the Valencian people. The Avenida Jacinto Benavente and Avenida Blasco Ibañez (formerly the Paseo al Mar in the 1950’s), have been gradually extended. The Alameditas de Cervantes next to the historical Quart towers contain a fountain-monument and the expressive figure of “El Palleter”, depicted during his battle against the French. The Paseo de JJ. Dómine or the Paseo de Neptuno are also gardens from the 1960’s and 70’s and follow the same design, particularly outstanding are the palm trees along the Avenida del Reino de Valencia.
