Offering an intimate and personal atmosphere, La Pitanza is one of Valencia’s best-loved restaurants. On first glance, the restaurant may not appear as stylish or as fancy as many of the other eateries in the city but that is entirely missing the point. People come here for the food and the ambience, both of which are among the very best in town.
With a menu entirely based on traditional Valencia and Spanish dishes, the restaurant has a real comfortable family atmosphere. This feeling is evident with the exceptionally charming staff and their warm, friendly attitude even comes through when browsing the menu. Many of the dishes on offer, from the croquettes with confit ratatouille “just like my grandmother makes them” to the market salad “with vegetables from the garden” – demonstrate how every detail of La Pitanza is aimed towards making the diners feel right at home. An array of traditional dishes enhance the homely feel, with gazpacho, Iberian cheeks in red wine, authentic Iberian ham and veal carpaccio made with local Valencia meat. The slow-cooked homemade stews are particularly delicious.
An entire page of the menu is dedicated to rice and includes some adventurous dishes such as octopus rice and squash, chestnut rice with deer and boar, and sticky rice with sausage and squid. This gives a nice twist on the classic rice dishes seen in many restaurants across town, although the trusty paella does of course make an appearance. The menu del dia is on offer from day to night for less than 20 euros, including a collection of three starters based on the freshest produce from the market, a main course and a delicious homemade dessert.
Located in the centre of the Carmen district, La Pitanza is a real gem in the heart of the city.
