Summer nights by the seaside

City Life, Events and Entertainment, What to Do Comments Off

Summer nights in Valencia are not for sleeping. As the sun goes down and the temperatures drop slightly, it is the best time of day to enjoy life al fresco. A drink with friends on a terrace, a seaside club to dance the night away, a movie in the gardens, a gentle walk by the sea… with so many options on offer in Valencia, you will never want to go to bed!

During the summer months, daytime temperatures in Valencia may soar well into the 30s. That’s why the streets are empty as most locals hide away in air-conditioned rooms (at home or in shops and restaurants) or head to the city’s beaches and swimming pools to cool down. Come the evening and everything changes: then everybody is out, drinking, walking, chatting… Valencia truly comes to life in the summer nights.

The streets and squares in popular nightlife areas like Ruzafa or the central Barrio del Carmen are abuzz with late night drinkers and diners filling the summer terraces of bars and restaurants. The City of Arts and Sciences is also a popular choice for a night out as the gardens of the Umbracle transform into a colourful chill out terrace and disco. However, it is the seafront where most locals head to in the summer nights.

Some, particularly families, simply go for a leisurely walk along the Paseo Maritimo to enjoy the sea breeze, stopping to browse the craft market on the Malvarrosa beach, or for an ice cream at places like Glasol. Further along the beach, in Alboraya, the terrace at Horchateria Daniel is also a favourite stop for a refreshing horchata.

Young revellers may prefer chiringuitos (beach bars) like El Ocho on the Patacona beach, where they can dance in the sand to the music of local DJs. For a bite to eat nearby, La Más Bonita is a popular place for late night cakes and snacks.

The trendiest bars and clubs can be found around the Marina de Valencia, where the party goes on well into the small hours. You can enjoy live music at the Veles e Vents building, or relax with a cocktail by the pool at the Marina Beach Club. The High Cube floating platform in the middle of the marina hosts special events with some of the top DJs, or you can dance the night away to indie and electronic music at La 3 (Avenida del Puerto).

Tel me more, tell me more…

Summer nights are not just for drinking and dancing. There are also more cultural pursuits to be found in Valencia. Outdoor cinema is a popular activity offered in several parts of the city, as well as in many nearby villages and even on their beaches. In the city, try the Metropol (Avenida Cortes Valencianas 1) at the San Jose school in the Campanar district, or the Filmoteca d’Estiu at the gardens outside the Palau de la Música.

You can also enjoy late night shows about the Universe at the Hemisferic, comedy at the terrace outside the Prince Felipe Science Museum, or dolphin shows at the Oceanografic, all part of the special programme at the City of Arts and Sciences. And if you don’t mind travelling outside Valencia, the Sagunt a Scena festival brings music, theatre and dance to the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Sagunto.

Summer days in Valencia are fun, but… oh, those summer nights!
