Rock by the sea, jazz in the gardens, classical music by the lakeside…all can be enjoyed in the warm Valencian summer nights. As the temperatures soar during the day, the evenings are the perfect time to meet up with friends and enjoy some of the best local, national and international music in Valencia’s full programme of open air concerts.
Valencians love life “al fresco” – the city’s warm Mediterranean climate is perfect for relaxed drinks or a meal on a terrace, long walks by the sea or along the Turia Gardens, and, of course, outdoor entertainment like public cinema projections and live music. The summer months are packed with options to suit all ages and musical preferences.
Take the Gran Fira de Valencia in July, for a start, a month-long fiesta with fireworks, street markets, theatre, parades and plenty of music. The Jardines de Viveros is the place to rock until the early hours with some of the best national and international artists. The line up for the Viveros Concerts this year includes Chick Corea (17th July), UB40 (19th) and Jamie Cullum (24th).
The Gran Nit de Juliol, on 22nd July this year, is the Fira’s big night, when the whole city fills with music. There will be a choir singing outside the church of El Patriarca, pop at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, reggae at Plaza de Manises in the Barrio del Carmen… even the bells of the Miguelete will be ringing in a special concert. Many of the city’s museums and monuments like the Lonja will also be open late, from 8pm to 2am, in a very special cultural evening.
And there is more… From 17th-19th July, some of the national and international marching bands competing in the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Musica will perform at iconic spots like the Colon Market, Plaza de la Virgen and Valencia’s seafront. Techno, house and disco will take over the Marina of Valencia for the Electrosplash Festival on 21st-22nd July.
Valencia’s Botanical Gardens also house their own programme of outdoor acoustic concerts, Sons al Botanic, throughout the summer. This year, you can enjoy soul (21st July), indie (25th August) and surf music (15th September) amidst the lush vegetation.
During the warm months, the students of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, which has a campus in Valencia, delight locals and visitors alike with their free performances at the City of Arts and Sciences: the popular Un Lago de Conciertos programme.Every Friday evening in July and September, they perform on a special stage on the lake surrounding l’Hemisferic – a stunning backdrop to enjoy jazz, folk, classical or electronic music.
The spectacular Veles e Vents building by the Marina of Valencia is also a regular live music venue – as well as the new home of the Michelin starred La Sucursal restaurant. Local bands perform here every Thursday at 8pm, and there are also extra rock and pop concerts throughout July and August as part of the Live the Roof festival.
Finally, the biggest open air concerts take place at venues like Valencia’s Bullring. This summer, it is the turn of Miguel Bose, one of Spain’s biggest stars of the last few decades, who will perform here on 6th September.
Great music, warm weather, beautiful surroundings… what’s not to like?
