Las Fallas, which runs from the 15th to the 19th of March, will see the ninots taking centre stage as usual.
These colossal figures are made out of wood, cardboard and papier-mâché and designed to satirise some of the biggest names in politics and popular culture, with this year’s stars including some very famous faces. More than 700 puppets will be paraded around the city in a flurry of colour, with festival participants dressed in traditional embroidered outfits.
Past puppets have represented Lady Gaga, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel, while this year some very pretty puppets will represent George Clooney and his wife Amal, in a nod to their stay in Valencia last year when Clooney was filming “Tomorrowland.”
On a more sobering note, this year there will also be puppets in honour of the French magazine, Charlie Hebdo.
All of the ninots are currently on display prior to the big festival – this fantastic exhibition is also a competition, and the most popular ninot will be saved from the fire and displayed in the Fallas Museum.
