Saint Bruno

Francisco Ribalta. San Bruno. (1627-28).
This is part of a dismantled altarpiece from the Carthusian
monastery of Portaceli. It is a gem of the incipient but solid
school of Spanish baroque naturalism.
The gesture, together with the volume and “tactile values” of
the habits, as well as the foreshortening of the arm holding
the book, all herald the robust winds of renewal after the
mannerism dominating the previous century from the circle
of painters of Juan de Juanes.
